Transformation is definite. Implementation of an effective data mining work / interest group across the department enables the interested people to learn, utilize the resources and share the knowledge quickly in the dynamic domain of data mining. This group aids everyone to make strategic decision on research and to receive fund accordingly.
1.To develop a platform for exploring and exploiting.
2.To provide a 360-degree view about Data mining.
3.To establish a working group, to identify challenges and to provide cost effective solutions.
4.To stretch opportunities and to encourage researchers in the domain of data mining.

The Special Interest Group (SIG)-Data mining / Big data of Department of
Computer Science and Engineering of SRM University, Kattankulathur in association with IET (The Institution of
Engineering and Technology) has organized a five days National Workshop on Big Data Analytics Tools -
NWBAT-2017 from 23rd February - 27th February 2017. The IET professional members are sponsored to attend the
workshop by IET Chennai Network. More than 60 IET professional members and 9 Non-IET members registered for
the course. The budget for the workshop is 2.16 lakhs for the five days. Rs. 96000 was sponsored by SRM and
remaining money of 1.2 lakh was sponsored by IET-CLN. Exposure to advanced technologies and hands-on training
on open source tools such as Hadoop, R and E-views help the teaching community to guide the students on
cutting edge tools. Hence, this kind of workshops are organized with the support of SRM University.
The Special Interest Group (SIG)-Data mining / Big data of Department of
Computer Science and Engineering of SRM IST, Kattankulathur in association with IET (The Institution of
Engineering and Technology) has organized a five days National Workshop on Big Data Analytics Tools -
NWBAT-2018 from 06th February - 10th February 2018.
Dr.E. Poovammal, Professor, Department of CSE is the convener of the workshop. Mrs.P. Akilandeswari

Exposure to advanced technologies and hands-on training on open source tools such as R, MATLAB,
PYTHON, MOA, and E-views help the teaching community to guide the students on cutting-edge tools. Positibe
feedback was provided by the participants. Instead of lecturing, the sessions were engaged by lot of hands on
training. Materials given by the resource person were mailed to the participants to work further. The
organizing committee thanks the IET officials and SRM management for sponsoring this successful workshop.
We as a team of the SIG “Data Mining Analytics” felt the need to share
the knowledge related to data science and provide hands on training with practice exercises to participants,
currently being followed. Thus the faculty development programme is planned to provide insight into data
science tools and techniques. This programme is planned in a way to enable faculty members to acquire
knowledge related to data science to considerable level with satisfaction.
Dr. B. Amutha, Professor & Head, Department of CSE was the Chairperson of the workshop.
The FDP focused on an innovative approach towards conducting such events by adapting “FLIPPED
CLASSROOM” pattern. This mode of teaching and learning was provided as a hand-on session by IITB (IIT -
BOMBAY), we decided to use the same in our FDP. Through this approach we provided flexible timing for our
participants to view the course content delivery in the form of videos.
The involvement of the participants during the session indicates that the sessions were up-to the
expectation
of the participants. The facilitators of the programmehad an interactive session with the participants and
hence at least couple of modifications is expected to happen in the mode of content and hands on session
delivery.
The number of students registered for NWBAT -2020 is 147 students from various states of Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Telangana out of which 36 students made their confirmation and have participated in this workshop. Few participants showed their interest in brainstorming competition and opted for mentors from the expert list of the workshop. The workshop is inaugurated by Dr. E. Poovammal, with a motivational and welcome address that focused on the importance and advancement of Big data analytics in many application fields.
The first session was handled by S.Thenmalar, who gave a comprehensive introduction on how to explore the data along with data visualization and P. Mahalakshmi gave a brief demo on data visualization using the tool Tableau. The second session was handled by R. Lavanya discussed Classification Algorithms using Naïve Bayes and D. Viji gave a brief demo on the classification algorithm using the Weka tool.
The next session was handled by Dr. E. Poovammal, who gave a brief idea on Business intelligence tools and discussed accessing the data for the creation of graphs, dashboards and how to share the report using the data studio tool.
On the second day, the session was handled by C.Sindhu and R.Vidhya has discussed the clustering algorithms and gave a demo on the Weka tool. The next session was handled by M. Umadevi has given a brief idea on association rule mining and demonstrated using the tool. The third-day session was handled by B.Sowmya and AshwathyK. Cherian has given a brief idea about outlier analysis and gave a demo on finding out the outliers in the data using the tool. The next session was handled by P.Akilandeswari and B.Ida Seraphim have discussed the time series analysis session and gave a demonstration using the tool and the workshop was concluded successfully.
All the active participants were given Participation Certificate, through email.
